Attorney Stephen M. Libman is co-founder of Burnes & Libman, a 22-year-old Chicago-based law firm, which has gained national prominence and local acclaim for jury verdicts and multi-million dollar settlements. Stephen specializes in transportation litigation.
Stephen is the principal founder of the Center for Trucking Safety, a forum where advocates collaborate to improve motor carrier and transportation safety through legislation and litigation. Recently, Stephen was appointed as President of the Association of Plaintiff Interstate Trucking Lawyers of America (APITLA).
He is recognized for arguing new and innovative theories to gain multi-million dollar settlements and gained the national spotlight recently by successfully negotiating a $15.6 million wrongful death settlement in a federal case against a motor carrier, transportation broker and shipping manufacturer.
He recently again received national recognition for a $12.89 million wrongful death settlement on behalf of a surviving male spouse against a wind tower manufacturer, a national transportation broker, a trucking company and two pilot car escort vehicles arising out of the transportation of a wind tower component in violation of its hours of operation permit.
Stephen was also honored with the 2015 APITLA Theodore Roosevelt “MAN IN THE ARENA” Award for his professional achievements in the promotion of Interstate Trucking Highway Safety.
For consecutive years, Libman’s cases have been included in Chicago Lawyer Magazine’s “Top 100 Settlements or Verdicts in Illinois,” with a Top 5 listing in 2006. He is a member of the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum, the Association of Plaintiffs Interstate Trucking Lawyers of America’s National Advisory Board, the American Association of Justice, the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, the National Trial Lawyers Association, Top 100 Attorneys, the Chicago Bar Association. He has earned industry recognition as an author and lecturer on vehicle dynamics, trial strategies and transportation litigation.
He is also on the National Advisory Board of the American Plaintiffs Interstate Trucking Lawyers Association. He is also recognized by Rue’s Ratings as one of “The Best Attorneys in America” and he has recently lectured at the “APITLA National Interstate Trucking Conference” on Innovations in Broker/Shipper liability.
